“Comedy is my thing. Even at school I told my teachers. I don’t need maths! I am going to be a filmmaker and a comedian! My teacher, Mrs. Cloete, said that this was weird. She told me I needed a back-up plan, but I haven’t needed one yet. So Mrs. Cloete…fingers crossed!”
When asked how he would define himself, Kagiso Lediga laughed and said that he was different people on different days… he’s a father, a husband, a comedian. The one thing that however stuck out, was the fact that being a South African defines him.
“It’s my narrative. You know…Like being a Jew in 1948…”
Comedians or as I prefer to call them, social commentators, play a central role in allowing society to claim its identity. As a comedian, Kagiso hopes that his work would have a mirroring effect on people, especially South Africans. That they would look at these situation, recognise themselves and their society, and LAUGH! He feels that South Africa and Africa at large, is still searching for an identity, separate from the narrative known and told by the rest of the world. Comedy is an age old art form, used in the Royal courts to release political tension and to raise issues without causing immediate war.
South Africa has an amazing breed of comedians, raising awareness on both local and international issues, making hardcore statements, reaching audiences that no politician ever will.
If society can’t laugh at itself, it will implode and our particularly brilliant brand of comedy seems to save our society from imploding time and time again. So what’s next for Kagiso Lediga…?
He has just finished a script that will go into production towards the end of the year and is also working on a movie with John Barker called Wonder Boy for President – A mockumentary about this guy who is a Julias Malema character, birthed by the sea and then taken by a branch of the ANC who tries to mould him into a leader that they can control. Unfortunately he goes out of control and falls in love with a DA leader – a Lindiwe Mazibuko type – and then breaks loose… ”really really funny”. This movie will release early 2015. We will keep you posted!
